Sometimes the simplest idea can make the biggest difference...

So who says life can’t imitate art.

Remember the Pay it Forward movie made in 2000 about a young boy whose teacher challenged him to think of something to change the world. As a result the boy came up with the idea that when someone does you a big favor, don’t pay it back, pay it forward. A not so novel idea that struck a nerve with many and started a real life social movement. The Pay it Forward foundation was created and has inspired good works throughout the world.

A few writing blogs have adopted this 'pay it forward' philosophy to create connections and community in cyberspace. I’m not sure who started it (if anyone knows please let me know?) but I first came across it at Deborah Ng’s Freelance Writing Jobs site. From there I followed the trail to A Writer’s Blog by Karen M. Lynch, a thought provoking blog from another freelance writer.

Today I got a ‘pay it forward’ plug today from Karen M. Lynch at A Writer’s Blog (thanks Karen). Hopefully, this will provide me with a larger audience for my blog and encourage me on my journey as a freelance writer.

Because freelance writing, I have decided, is quite isolating. As is living in New Zealand when you're hoping to become well published in American magazines and newspapers. It makes the internet so much more important. For me the internet has become a lifeline to connections with other writers, information, conversations about writing, and access to editors. How did we survive without it? Can anyone even remember life before the internet…and blogs???
