Australasian Freelance Writers Conferences...

I received the latest NZ Freelance Writer newsletter yesterday. As usual, full of all sorts of helpful information. But what caught my eye was the mention of two freelance writers conferences early next year. The 10th Annual Australian Freelance Journalists Conference is being held in Sydney (31 March-01 April) and Freelance 2007, NZ 2nd Annual Freelance Conference will be in Auckland (3-4 May 2007). I must mark these on my calender and make an effort to attend…

Thanks for the heads up on the Aussie conference Liz. I'll definitely try to attend this.

Do you have another link for the NZ one, or any further info?: Just wondering if it's the same program as in Oz, or completely separate?

The link leads to a site under construction.

Thanks a million

Hi Yvonne, haven't got too much info on NZ conference, except that it is more NZ orientated - ie NZ speakers (editors, freelancers, etc). It's two days and costs NZ$100 (NZ$75 if enrolled before 31 March). Am waiting moe info on website from Feb 1, 2007.

The Aussie website at least has a program, but no indication of where in Sydney the conference will be held. Meanwhile, I'll be keeping a look out for cheap airfares... Happy holidays. Liz

No Sydney venue? - lol... note the end date of the conference is April 1st. ;)

I've emailed them re the venue details, so will let you know if I hear back.

Thanks for a great blog. Wishing you a great Christmas and all the best for 2007.

Hi Yvonne and Liz, thought I'd jump in and clarify the NZ conference. The first conference, held in April this year, was inspired by my own attendance at the Aussie conference a couple of years ago. The Australian conference, organised by the Alliance, is fantastic and well worth attending. The NZ one is slightly shorter -- one full day and a welcome function the night before. For $75 (the early bird rate), you get the welcome function, a full day of about 16 speakers AND an after-conference function. It's going to be fun, and if this year's attendance (150 people and a waiting list) is anything to go by, a hot seller. So if you're interested in attending I'd suggest booking as early as possible. Bookings will open Feb 1.

Hi Kim, thanks for aditional informtion on NZ conference. Is the venue set yet? At this stage, I plan on attending both conferences so have marked Feb 1 on my calender as enrollment day. Cheers, Liz

Liz, the NZ conference will held at the Hyatt Regency in Auckland. It's held in loose conjunction with the Magazine Publishers' Association's annual dinner and seminars.

Also with the Australian conference, which is considerably more expensive, you can obtain the union (Alliance) rate if you're a member of the local New Zealand union for journalists (EPMU) You can join the EPMU at the part-time rate as a freelancer.

Cheers
Kim
