Flipping through the magazines at Borders (my new home away from home), I got to thinking about my file of Christmas article ideas that I have been collecting for the past couple of years. So yesterday I spent some time going through the file and listed 5 solid articles ideas that I want to sell. Obviously I’m way too late for this year…
But with Christmas in the air, it seems the logical time to start drafting query letters and article outlines. I have a pretty good idea which magazines I want to target. What I want to know is when do you start sending out ‘query letters for Christmas articles’? A month before Christmas, two months, three months…
Any thoughts?

Thinking about Christmas articles...

Now!! Most magazines work at least three to six months in advance, with some working an excess of one year in advance. I know Food & Wine is currently preparing for Christmas 2007!
My suggestion is to research your targeted magazines and find out how far they work in advance (don't forget to factor in response time).
As a rule, I pitch stories six months in advance. Right now, I'm working on July 4th and back-to-school articles. I'll start pitching Christmas in about two or three months.
Hope this helps,

terah, thanks for the info. Will get right onto researching the magazines so that I will be lined up to pitch by at least March. Cheers, Liz
