I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m having trouble keeping track of all my query letters and article submissions. I seem to be surrounded by dozens of scraps of paper, with email addresses, story titles, and comments written on them. There must be a better way.
So the ‘Tuesday Question’…
What system do you use to keep track of your submissions ? What would you recommend? Is it better to have a paper trail or use a computer program ?
Let’s talk….

Liz, I set myself up a table in Microsoft Word that holds the data -- it's my personal query/submission tracker! If you'd like I can email you the set up!
Hi Karen, that would be great. I was thinking about creating some sort of spreadsheet, but last time I tried that, the computer nearly went out the window!!! Mind you, it wsa probably the topic (budget) that was causing the most grief.
I have considered buying on of the numerous 'query tracking' programs I've seen advertised but always seemed like a unnecessary expense. Cheers, Liz
Hi Liz, I use the Submission Tracker on Writer's Market but now that I have more than just a few pitches going at once, plus actual assignments, it seems rather clunky.
I think I'm going to end up doing a simple Word doc or Excel spreadsheet that meets my own requirements, or I'll go nuts.
As it is, I've started going to the Sent folder in my email program to remember which query went where, and to whom. AArrgghh!!
Hi sheila, interesting that you are finding the submission tracker problematic - think I will skip that. Sounds like a homemade computer file might be the way to go. Will have to tackle the spreadsheet again. Thanks Liz
I use a spreadsheet on Microsoft Excel. I have it set up with multiple columns, including publication, submission date, response, follow up, and follow up date.
Hope this helps!
hi terah, thanks for that. Sounds the spreadsheet is the way to go. Much better than the shoebox that is now the storage area for all my scraps of paper. Cheers, Liz
Hey hun, you can download this program called "Sonar," and it was created just for the purpose of keep track of submissions, queries, replies, contact info, etc. I posted about it a couple of days ago, but here's the direct link to the program. It's free, and I've had it on my computer for a few months now with no problems. Everything is already set up for you. It's great thus far.
