Major Computer Malfunction...

Last week I turned on the computer and just about cried…my desktop screen was devoid of all icons except those of a brand new computer.

There was no articles folder, photos folder, query letters folder, or any other type of folder on the screen.

Just a little message saying something along the lines of ‘…unable to open local profile…corrupt file…temporary profile will be opened’.

Everything, it seemed, had vanished. This would have been okay if I had actually backed up all my work…but, of course, I hadn’t. It was one of those things I was going to do...'next week'.

Luckily I happen to know a computer genius who somehow managed to find and retrieve all the lost material…and then proceeded to give me a long lecture on backing up all materials.

Now I have a shopping list of things I've been told I need:

Portable Hard Drive to save all documents every week.

USB Flash Drive to save whatever I’m working on each day.

Think I might add a few of these to the list as a thank you…to the white knight who saved the day…

What’s your nightmare computer story ???

Eeek! I am always scared something will happen to my computer...again. Last computer I had seemed to just completely break down in the matter of a week. First the power button came loose and I had a hard time turning it on and off. Then I managed to download a program that a friend recommended (without telling me one very specific detail) and I got virus after virus. I managed to clean that up and then the entire computer shut down, never to be started again. This computer has managed to last me 2 years with no trouble so far. *knock on wood*

Hi April, sounds like your old computer had a mind of it's own...the new one sounds much more stable...

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that mine has had it's moment of madness and will get back to being 'well behaved' again...

Meanwhile, I'd better get shopping so I can back things up...

Cheers, Liz

My computer nightmare was in college when I was trying to do too many things at once and spilled vanilla chai latte all over my keyboard (apparently computers don't like Starbucks as much as I do). Oddly, the computer did not die a swift death, but slowly over the next several months the lack of reliability drove me crazy.

First, the return key didn't work, so I tried to do without (impossible when you're trying to write papers), then I bought an external keyboard. When the mother board started to die, I had to replace the whole darn thing. So far, so good with this computer, but given my track record with electronics it's only a matter of time before I screw up again!

PS It's worth the money to buy a few tech toys and get piece of mnid.

What a waste of a good chai latte. I've always had a fear of spilling drinks on the computer...figure if I put any nearby it would only be a matter of time...so keep the computer and drink separate...

We think we have control of the computer...until it takes control of us...

I'm keeping my fingers crossed cause I don't have time to buy any tech toys til later in week (lost a couple of writing days last week so am trying to catch up with a project due tomorrow)...

Eep! That's scary. I'm glad it worked out for you.

Many Years Ago (tm) I lost a bunch of my old writing when the keyboard shelf landed on top of my computer. The needle in the hard drive slashed across the data. I was hosed.
