A recent article in the local newspaper stated that ‘Kiwis enjoying the sweet taste of summer {commercially grown} strawberries may be helping to chew a 12sq km hole in the ozone layer this year.’ (Sunday Star Times Nov 12, 2006). It’s not the strawberries themselves that are the culprit. It’s the chemical methyl bromide that’s used by growers to sterilize the soil that’s causing all the problems. And to be fair, not all growers are still using it. But in an effort to help save the ozone layer, I will stop buying strawberries. Such a drastic measure, however, requires a countermeasure, so I spent the weekend planting my own strawberries...completely chemical free. Let’s just hope they grow in time for Christmas. Down here in New Zealand, Christmas isn’t Christmas without the strawberries…and ice cream.
