Knowing what an editor wants is half the battle when sending out query letters. So how do you find out what they want? According to Catherine Hamm, travel editor at The Los Angeles Times, the best way to do this is by understanding their editorial product. Other tips include:
- Focus on what’s new and innovative.
- Zero in on ‘future news’ - or pitching the ‘next big thing’.
- Editors want ‘underdog’ stories.
- Try to meet the editor in person.
