The Tuesday Question???

After my posts over the weekend about ‘independent bookstores’, I thought I’d keep to the same theme for the Tuesday question.

Tuesday Question: What’s your favorite hometown independent bookstore ? What’s the best independent bookstore you’ve found in your travels ? What makes them good ?

Give me enough bookstores and I’ll make a list everyone can share…

Let’s talk…

My favorite hometown bookstore is Scorpio’s in Christchurch. A landmark with Cantabrians, Scorpio’s has been around for years. There’s nothing modern about it - no coffee shop and no internet. But the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, the books are diverse and interesting, and there are old leather chairs scattered around the shop to collapse in. In a nutshell, the atmosphere is great.

Am still debating about my favorite indie bookstore found in my travels. Will let you know later today…

My favorite hometown bookstore in the US is BookPeople in Austin, Texas. Outside the US, I like Shakespeare & Co. in Paris (they have a neat Ground Zero Paris stamp that they'll put in your book -- I bought my daughter "The Little Prince" in French and had it stamped. Pretty cool.

Trident Booksellers and Cafe in Boston, Mass. They have great vegan chili and an interesting selection of quirky books and imported magazines.

thanks for sharing your bookstores. Haven't been to any of them (yet) but they sound great. And they provide more than just books - they provide character and uniqueness - something I think all independent bookstores need to do to survive.

I've been thinking about the bookstores I've come across in my travels - truth is I can't remember the name of many of them. So for my travel bookstore, I'll name the last one I visited - in Tucson, Arizona - which was situated along the historic and eccentric 4th Avenue -which was probably part of it's appeal - Antigone Books where I spent a pleasant summer afternoon getting out the heat.

New York City has : Books of Wonder (children's book store with Cupcake Cafe attached); The Traveler's Bookstore, Mysterious Bookstore.

West Chester, PA (outside Philly) has Baldwin's Book Barn

Denver, CO has The Tattered Cover Bookstore.

These are well worth a visit.

Powell's acres of books in Portland, OR is the best book store I've ever been to.

Shakespeare's books in NYC is a great, small, bookstore.
